MAPPADENDANG SIBAWA SERE API
Mappadendang was a traditional party of great harvest in the past. In fact, it was ever joined in contest of Indonesia anniversary in the past. The meaning of Mappadendang is “making sound or rhythm by using a big mortar or “Palungeng Loppo”. The mortar was always played by five or six people. This party was usual done after the harvest fallen on feet. Actually, the mortar was one of container that was made from bunch tree for pounding or smashing something, for example rice, hulled rice, sugar and others. Actually, the mortar began to disappear because technology of agriculture developed in the city. For example factory, factory of rice and the others that it changed all of traditional tools in the society.
In modern era, one by one traditional party in Bone began to be lost like Massempe or Mallanca (competing calf), Mattojang or Mappere (swing) and Mappadendang. Whereas culture of Mappadendang stored philosophy that was very high and constituted medium of ours great-grandparents for consolidating coalescence and oneness.
In the past, if there were people to strike a big mortar, all of neighbors swarmed to source of sound. And then they changed to strike the mortar one another if there were people that were tired to strike it. In the past, if they pounded rice, they helped one another and they sometime organized rhythm of sound mortar until the sound was good to be heard. Yeah, this was a founder of village until the term of “Mappadendang” appeared in society.
Mappadendang used to do every year when rice field had cropped. After rice had struck, people used to play Mappadendang.
Sometime, people Mappadendang when the mortar had finished to be made and the mortar was around house. When the mortar had been around house, they created Sere Api (Showing Fire) that were done by certain people. Certain people that were intended were people that had ability to stand and sit down on the fire without their body were burned. However, time by time people that had ability to play on the fire had not done again cause there were something that could make dangerous.
In the past, when I came back from watching Mappadendang and Sere Api, my mother and I spoke about Mappadendang and Sere Api.
Rullah : Mom, I have watched about Mappadendang and Sere Api.
My mother : With whom?
Rullah : With my friends.
My mother : How about its show?
Rullah : Wow, it is wonderful Mom.
My mother : How about its implementation?
Rullah : The first, the people burn many woods that have prepared before. While they were waiting for the fire to be burnt, women that have task for arranging rhythm of mortar voice have to be rung. After that, men that have task as Sere Api to begin their dance together around the mortar and sometime they strike their Alu (Crusher) to the mortar. Their dance is so funny. Afterwards, men have ability for standing and dancing no fire while showing their dance that is funny.
My mother : How long the men can stand on the fire?
Rullah : Just a moment.
My mother : What are their names?
Rullah : I don’t know mom.
My mother : Does I gellung’s husband attend?
Rullah : No, he does not.
My mother : Mean, the Sere Api is no interest.
Rullah : Why do you say like that mom?
My mother : Because the Sere Api is only done by people that have not
Enough ability for Sere Api.
Rullah : So, who person can play about Sere Api?
My mother : Igellung’s husband.
Rullah : oh, he is. How about his ability?
My mother : He can stand up and sit down on the fire some minutes.
Rullah : Ah, mean, Sere Api was not god last night.
My mother : Yes, it is right.
Rullah : Perhaps, why does Igellung’ husband not attend?
My mother : He seldom does Sere Api to show his ability on the fire in some minutes because it has to be done in specific time.
Rullah : why has the Sere Api to be done in specific time?
My mother : because Sere Api is so dangerous
Rullah : why is Sere Api reputed dangerous?
My mother : Sere Api is very dangerous because the fire so hot and the fire can break their body.
Rullah : I know that the fire is very hot but he has ability that is admirably for standing on the fire some minutes.
My mother : Actually, Sere Api is seldom done because sometime people make something wrong in the fire. For example nail and iron.
Rullah : what happen if there is people throw a nail in the fire?
My mother : their Baca-Baca that they use for ability to stand on the fire will not use and it can make dangerous for their body.
Rullah : So, it is really dangerous.
My mother : It is a its reason, now Sere Api is seldom done because we have to pay attention in order that there are people disturb the player. Usually, if it is night, we cannot see people that disturb the Sere Api.
Rullah : Oh, I see.
